There are many different kinds of remote controlled vehicles out there, but one of the most popular is RC electric boats. There is just something about the idea of being able to skim along the water with a speed electric boat, enjoying the elegant lines and trim beam of a class A sailboat, or even speeding along with a battle ship replica.
No matter what kind of RC boats you choose from, there are many benefits of owning an electric model instead of a gas or Nitro powered boat. One of these is that electric boats don't use fuel, so they don't produce any toxic fumes, or have risk of leaking gas and oil into the water source. In fact, there are many areas where you can only use sailboats or electric motors.
RC boats have electric motors instead of gas powered, are quieter, have less moving parts, and last far longer that small combustion engines. With an electric motor, there are fewer problems, and usually when they go out you have to replace it completely. They run on rechargeable battery packs, and these packs have a long life span, even with repeated charges. Electric boats can go for at least the same time if not longer than gas models between charges and many enthusiasts keep an extra pack with them.
There is also a really big different between RC boats and gas models. When a gas boat runs out of gas, it is usually suddenly, and many people have to fish their model out of the water. When electric boats start to lose their charge, in most cases you can limp it back to shore without having to go for a swim.
There are a few drawbacks to owning electric boats. One of the drawbacks with RC boats is that you compromise speed. An electric boat can go fast, up 25MPH at full throttle, but the batteries will run down much faster. Gas models can go much more, 35MPH or better depending on make and model.
RC boats are perfect for the beginner, because they are more reliable, easier to control, and require much less maintenance than gas models. Because electric boats cost less, a newbie can use and abuse it, and get as much practice in without worrying about damaging it too much. Many of these RC products come Ready-To-Run, which means that don't need any assembly, so you can start boating right out of the box.
Now there are real RC electric boats, and toy electric boats. The cheaper the product, the more of a toy style you will find. When buying quality electric RC boats, on the low end of the scale are products that cost around $35-$40. These are made from high impact plastics, are powered by six volt, high performance motors, and come complete with the boat battery pack, charger, and Radio controller, the nine-volt transmitter battery sold separately. Almost all of these are RTR. As you go up in price, you start finding more and more products that you have to assemble yourself from kits. These can cost well into the hundreds of dollars.
